I developed Toko, my very first Figma plugin, to bridge the gap between design and development for our small team. We had an internal design system, and manual updates of variables to code were slowing us down. I wanted a seamless way to export design tokens directly into code.
Early on, I hit a challenge. I started in a cloud tool, but it couldn’t connect to Figma. I switched to local development, dove deep into the Figma API, and crafted a solution. The plugin converts Figma variables into multiple formats:
JSON
JS
CSS Variables
Tailwind Variables
Text styles in JSON and CSS
You can copy, download, or push directly to GitHub. Feedback was positive! I refined it, adding a nested tree and selectable checkboxes. It wasn’t easy, but seeing devs smoothly using it gave me that "mission accomplished" moment. We kept it mostly internal, but it’s out there in the Figma community—a quiet success I’m proud of.
